“The Iloilo River is now considered the venue for water sports activities and public entertainment owing to our collective efforts to rehabilitate and develop it," Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog said.
Of the 10 teams, six are from Metro Manila, two from Boracay and two from Iloilo City. Each team is composed of 22 members including 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steer. The 200-meter race will be at the stretch of Iloilo River along Muelle Loney street.
There will be three categories: mixed (eight women and 14 men), men’s category and novice.
“We expect excellent performance from the paddlers to add color to our 76th Charter Day celebration,” city sports and development officer Rommel Castro said.
The Iloilo City Charter anniversary is on August 25.
The Office of Senate President Frank Drilon, Philippine Olympic Commission, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation and the Iloilo City Sports and Development Office joined hands to make the dragon boat race possible.
Last year, Iloilo City also hosted the first national dragon boat competition along the then newly- opened Iloilo River Esplanade at Treñas Boulevard in Mandurriao district. Source: Iloilo City Govt Facebook.
