Street lamps in Iloilo City will soon be solar-powered courtesy of a Canadian investor who visited Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog recently.

Iloilo Esplanade street lamps will soon be solar-powered.
Alan Yong, a Vancouver businessman, proposed to the City Government for the solar street lighting of an initial 10 lampposts in the Iloilo Esplanade from Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue to Tabucan, Mandurriao.

“We were able to convince him to light the whole stretch, so that will be 31 posts in all,” the mayor said. “I am very much interested to have solar lighting in the whole city because this will tremendously lessen our electricity consumption."

Yong, married to a Filipina, was one of the 300 Canadian and American investors who came to the city for the Winter Escapade Tour last January.

He said he was really awed by the developments happening in the city and he wants to take part in its rapid growth. He also extended invitation to the mayor to attend a trade fair in Vancouver sometime in May next year.
