Regional Museum in Jaro

Iloilo City council has approved an ordinance calling for a deed of donation by and between the city government and the National Museum relative to the donation of the old Jaro municipal hall for the establishment of a Regional Museum extension office in Iloilo City.

In Tuesday's (August 12) regular session, city councilor Joshua Alim said the old building is presently occupied by the Jaro Police Station which will be transferred to a nearby building.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said that big plans are in store for the Jaro Plaza complex including the old building.

The National Museum and the National Historical Commission have already inspected the site and approved the improvement of the old building into a regional museum for Western Visayas.

Republic Act No. 10555 mainly sponsored by city lone district Representative Jerry P. Trenas declares the Jaro Cathedral, Molo Church, Iloilo City central business district, Fort San Pedro, Jaro Plaza complex, Molo Plaza complex and Plaza Libertad complex, all located in the city of Iloilo, as cultural heritage tourism zone.

Mabilog said the old Jaro building is more than 100 years old and a recognized historical heritage edifice. It is the first seat of the city government as a municipal hall. [via Source]
