Iloilo City Top 3 in National Literacy Award

Iloilo City has been chosen in the Top 3 of 2018 National Literacy Awards (NLA) under the Outstanding Local Government Unit (LGU) for highly urbanized category of the Department of Education (DepEd).


Validators visited the metropolis for the validation and on-site ocular of educational initiatives on August 7.

“It is truly an honor and privilege for Iloilo City to join the prestigious contest for the first time and chosen as finalist. This recognition is a manifestation of our efforts as educational center which propels our promising potentials as emerging economic destination,” Mayor Jose Espinosa III said.

The team validated the City Government’s educational programs as well as its support DepEd, from budget to infrastructures.

They visited the Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC) Molo campus, Kabalaka Gallery on Disaster Risk Reduction Management advocacies at Ker Building beside City Hall and Alternative Learning System (ALS) of Indigenous Peoples Ati community at Brgy. Lanit in Jaro district.

The validators were Raquel Castillo, lead convenor of Sustainability and Participation through Education and Lifelong Learning; Elizabeth Cuisia, senior information officer of Philippine Information Agency (PIA); and Anna Liza F. Bonagua, director of Bureau of Local Government (BLGD) of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

The NLA, through the Literacy Coordinating Council (LCC), aims to distinguish the best practices in literacy which help alleviate poverty, provide livelihood, address welfare needs, promote freedom, and make education facilities accessible.
