Typhoon Yolanda displaces 6,000 in Iloilo

Typhoon Yolanda that passed by the northern tip of Iloilo province Thursday has displaced nearly 6,000 families in 16 affected towns and the component City of Passi.

The displaced families, based on the latest report of the Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC)of whom many of them are now at the evacuation centers, come from the towns of Miag-ao, Mina, Janiuay, Calinog, Guimbal, Concepcion, Alimodian, Dumangas, Banate, Duenas, Concepcion, Carles, Lemery, Zarraga, and Pavia.typhoon yolanda update

Meanwhile, Iloilo Provincial Police director Cornelio Salinas said that he has already instructed police officers to implement forced evacuation for those Ilonggos living along Aganan and Suague rivers that have rising water levels and with darkness engulfing these areas because of nighttime.

He said that the police were instructed to sound off the general alarm and to implement forced evacuation for those who still refuse to leave their homes along the Aganan and Suague rivers for it would be hard for the police to later rescue these families when it is already very dark.

“We are working on for a zero casualty so we want to ensure that the residents are safe,” Salinas said.

As for the damaged houses, the PDRRMC has received from Janiuay town a report that there were 105 houses totally damaged by the typhoon. (Source: PNA)
