Gonzales said the pedestrianization program every Sunday afternoon will become a sustainable one designed for the eventual restoration and public appreciation of the Calle Real as the city’s main commercial district.
The street stretch from Plazoleta Gay up to the Freedom Grandstand along JM Basa St.hosts several heritage commercial buildings with heritage architectural design appreciated by foreign tourists and students of ancient history.
The program started in December for a 90-day experiment by closing traffic at the road stretch and various cultural presentations were conducted to enhance the walkability and appreciation of a livable city.
Gonzales said that noted environmentalist Atty. Antonio Oposa, a Ramon Magsaysay awardee, showed appreciation to the pedestrianization program in giving back to the pedestrians the street to walk and enjoy even on Sunday only.
Oposa said that 50 percent of passageways belong to the pedestrian and Iloilo City is a model for the campaign on pedestrianization fit to be replicated in other cities.
