More than 5,000 indigent students and out-of-school youths (OSYs) who are interested to go back to school stand to benefit from this year’s special program for employment of students (SPES) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Western Visayas.

DOLE 6 Officer-in-Charge Salome O. Siaton said the 5, 220 targets were identified based on the pledges of partner local government units (LGUs) and private sector.

Salome disclosed that they are expected to work 30 days on the average. The recipients of the program will be paid a daily wage of PHP298.50. Forty percent will be shouldered by DOLE and the remaining 60 percent by the partner establishment or LGU.

However, since the region is now working on a new minimum wage, then the number of working hours maybe lessened once the new wage order in Western Visayas takes effect.

Recipient-students usually render duties during summer and Christmas breaks. Siaton said there are SPES recipients who were able to finish their education through this program.

Those interested to avail of the program have to meet the core requirements, which include income, age and grade.

The combined family income should be below the poverty threshold in the region, they must not be more than 25 years old. They are also required to obtain passing grades.

Siaton said they prefer those who are included in the National Household Targeting System (NHTS) data of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Also, preference is given to children of displaced workers and victims of calamities.

Those who are interested to avail of the program are advised to visit their nearest Public Employment Service Office (PESO). [via PNA]
