Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog made the announcement around 2AM of Tuesday, and posted it in his official Facebook page. The post reads:
"Because of the heavy flood caused by heavy downpour, I Jed Patrick E Mabilog, Mayor of Iloilo City declare that classes are suspended today, Tuesday September 27 in all levels for both private and public schools. Keep safe everyone."
For CPU students, the University President has made the following announcement:
"Classes in ALL LEVELS at CPU are suspended. Outdoor events are cancelled but indoor events for U-Day 2016 will continue. Offices will be closed but committee members & concerned personnel are requested to report."
PAGASA Visayas weather system issued heavy rainfall warning at 9:48 PM of September 26, putting Iloilo and the rest of Western Visayas at Yellow Level.
According to DepEd Order no. 43, series of 2012, which is based on Executive Order No. 66, local chief executives has the power to cancel/suspend classes in both public and private schools in the absence of storm signal warnings from PAGASA.
This is part of their capacity as chairpersons of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (LDRRMC), for the "general welfare of its people at all times, especially during disasters and calamities."
